A semi-driver died early this morning after colliding with a bison and rolling his truck. The Denver Post is reporting that the accident happened at about 3:35 a.m. on westbound U.S. 36 just north of Byers. Colorado State Trooper Nate Reid said the driver was hauling salt when his truck struck a bison that had wandered onto the highway. The collision caused the truck to run off the road and roll. The driver was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident and investigators are looking into where the bison came from and who may own the animal.
According to Defenders.org, between 1993 and 2003 there were 26,678 wildlife vehicle collisions in Colorado. Of those collisions, 2,266 people were injured and 23 people lost their lives. An Associated Press article has reported about a 69 car pileup on a Arizona highway. The pileup occurred “near Phoenix’s downtown area Saturday evening, closing the westbound roadway for hours and sending seven people to hospitals.” Drivers were surprised by a sudden downpour, and a spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety said that too many drivers were speeding and following one another too closely for the conditions the downpour created. Traffic in the area was delayed for over three hours as nearly half the vehicles in the pileup needed to be towed away.
Luckily no one was seriously injured in the pileup. This is not always the case. 6 people were killed and numerous others injured in a 46 car pileup in Portugal last week. According to a News Scotsman report weather was partially to blame for that massive accident as well.

A Fort Collins man was killed Wednesday morning following a fiery car crash. According to the Denver Post, Jason Downey was driving on Larimer County Road 19 when he ran off the road, overcorrected and rolled his vehicle. Mr. Downey was ejected from his vehicle when it rolled over and burst into flames. A passing motorist used their vehicle to push the burning vehicle away from Mr. Downey. A lawsuit has been filed by relatives of a Denver family killed by carbon-monoxide in an Aspen area house. According to 7News, the lawsuit was filed against companies that worked on the house and county building inspectors. The Boulder Daily Camera has reported that a “Tennessee truck driver accused of plowing through an upscale Longmont [Colorado] neighborhood” has pleaded guilty to all charges. The incident occurred in March and the truck driver faced 37 charges, including DUI and failing to report an accident. After pleading guilty, the truck driver, who is to be deployed to Afghanistan with the Army National Guard in a month, was sentenced to 48 hours of community service and fined $1,500 for his DUI.
Luckily, no one was injured or killed in the incident involving the Tennessee truck driver. This of course is not always the case. According to a Denver Post article, 31 people were killed and 161 injured in Colorado truck accidents in 2009.

TheDenverChannel.com (7News) is reporting that “Pueblo police are looking for the driver of a truck that was one of two vehicles that struck a 50-year-old pedestrian who later died from her injuries.” The pedestrian, who may have been intoxicated, was hit by a Buick and then a truck while crossing the street. The driver of the Buick stopped to offer assistance, but the driver of the truck kept going. Police are fairly certain the injuries sustained by the truck are what killed the pedestrian. The Colorado State Patrol has announced the implementation of a new program aimed at reducing the number of crashes between cars and big rigs. The Denver Post reports that the State Patrol will call the program TACT (Ticketing Aggressive Cars and Trucks). A spokesman for the State Patrol is hopeful that the program will reduce fatalities caused by accidents involving big rigs.
In 2009, 31 people were killed in car-big rig accidents in Colorado. In many cases, the cause of the accidents was aggressive driving. The State Patrol believes extra attention paid to aggressive drivers will result in the overall decline of big rig accidents.

9News is reporting that a man died this morning after his truck hit a cement truck head-on. The accident happened on Highway 56 east of Weld County Road 1. Investigators say that the pick-up truck was heading east and the cement truck heading west. Investigators are still trying to figure out why the accident happened but don’t suspect alcohol to be a factor.

A Golden woman is in the hospital after crashing her car in Rocky Mountain National Park. Denver Channel 7 is reporting that the single-car accident happened at about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, severely injuring the woman and temporarily closeing Bear Lake Road in the park about 70 miles northwest of Denver. The woman, whose name wasn’t released, was flown by an air ambulance to the Medical Center of the Rockies in Fort Collins. Authorities say she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

A father and son were injured in a car accident Monday morning. According to the Denver Post, a father and his 14-year-old son were driving to Heritage High School in Littleton when the father suffered a medical emergancy. The teen grabbed the steering wheel to avoid a near head-on collision with a car carrying four people, instead he smashed through a fence and hit a tree.
