An Associated Press article says that a new government report claims that around “15,00 people a month” suffer complications from hospital visits that ultimately contribute to their death. Medicare’s new chief, Dr. Donal Berwick, was reported to have said “we have to do better.” His agency has unveiled an new center “designed to develop and test new ways to improve quality of care and lower health care costs for everyone.” The center and program is one of several established by the new health care law aimed at helping Medicare improve patient safety.

Despite efforts to end surgical errors, they are still being reported by doctors. According to the Denver Post doctors are reporting operations performed on the wrong body parts and even on the wrong people. The Colorado Physician Insurance Co. published a study in the Archives of Surgery medical journal showing a database of errors that Colorado doctors had reported from January 1, 2002 to June 1, 2008. Of the 27,370 incidents reported in the database, 107 operations were performed on the wrong body part and 25 surgeries were performed on the wrong person altogether. About one fourth of those incidents resulted in significant harm to the patients, according to the studies investigators. The study’s lead author, Dr. Phillip Stahel of Denver Health Medical Center said, ‘The numbers are pretty shocking and not unique to Colorado. It is a worldwide phenomenon.”

A roll-over accident has claimed the life of one person and injured three others in Lakewood. The Denver Post is reporting that the accident happened near C-470 and West Alameda Parkway at about 2:00 p.m. Thursday. The accident occurred when the vehicle that crashed apparently struck another vehicle before careening of the highway and rolling down an embankment. A female occupant was pronounced dead at the scene. Another woman in the car was taken to Saint Anthony Central Hospital and a child was airlifted to Children’s Hospital. A person in the car that was struck was also taken to a local hospital.

A Louisville mother of two died in a fatal rollover crash Wednesday evening. According to 7News, the woman was traveling on Via Appia near South Boulder road when the vehicle went off the road and rolled. Two children in the vehicle were uninjured in the crash. According to Louisville police the father of one of her children has been arrested in connection with the accident. One University of Wyoming football player was killed and three of his teammates injured when a pickup truck they were in “drifted off a Colorado highway and crashed.” KDVR (Fox 31 News) has reported that the crash took place early Monday morning on Highway 287 in Larimer County. The young man who was killed was 19-year-old Ruben Narcisse of Miami. It is believed at this time that the three other men involved in the accident will make complete recoveries from their injuries. Colorado State Troopers think that the driver of the pickup, 19-year-old Trey Fox of Glenwood Springs, fell asleep at the wheel sending the truck off the road.

A semi-driver died early this morning after colliding with a bison and rolling his truck. The Denver Post is reporting that the accident happened at about 3:35 a.m. on westbound U.S. 36 just north of Byers. Colorado State Trooper Nate Reid said the driver was hauling salt when his truck struck a bison that had wandered onto the highway. The collision caused the truck to run off the road and roll. The driver was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident and investigators are looking into where the bison came from and who may own the animal.

A lawsuit has been filed by relatives of a Denver family killed by carbon-monoxide in an Aspen area house. According to 7News, the lawsuit was filed against companies that worked on the house and county building inspectors. TheDenverChannel.com (7News) is reporting that “Pueblo police are looking for the driver of a truck that was one of two vehicles that struck a 50-year-old pedestrian who later died from her injuries.” The pedestrian, who may have been intoxicated, was hit by a Buick and then a truck while crossing the street. The driver of the Buick stopped to offer assistance, but the driver of the truck kept going. Police are fairly certain the injuries sustained by the truck are what killed the pedestrian. Police have a description of the truck and its driver from witnesses.

9News is reporting that a man died this morning after his truck hit a cement truck head-on. The accident happened on Highway 56 east of Weld County Road 1. Investigators say that the pick-up truck was heading east and the cement truck heading west. Investigators are still trying to figure out why the accident happened but don’t suspect alcohol to be a factor.

A Golden woman is in the hospital after crashing her car in Rocky Mountain National Park. Denver Channel 7 is reporting that the single-car accident happened at about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, severely injuring the woman and temporarily closeing Bear Lake Road in the park about 70 miles northwest of Denver. The woman, whose name wasn’t released, was flown by an air ambulance to the Medical Center of the Rockies in Fort Collins. Authorities say she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
